The Light Within - Part 02: In conversation with Faiqa Kahalwan

Despite all the odds and handful of opportunities available; women of Pakistan are breaking all stereotypes, proving how much capable they are. Gone are the days, when women were considered good only for professions like teaching and medical, but now they are proving themselves in every sphere of life.

The Light Within is a three-part series wherein Laiba Zaman, a writer at Perspective, interviewed three successful women entrepreneurs of Pakistan about their business, journey, and struggles. This is the second part of the series featuring another successful and talented Pakistan-based entrepreneur, Faiqa Kahalwan. She started her own business of skin-care products, Purify by Faiqa Kahalwan, in 2019.

Q 1: A breif introduction about you and your business?

I am Faiqa Kahalwan, A 16 year old successful entrepreneur. As a child, I always loved taking care of my skin. I started experimenting on my face when I was 12. And in 2019, when I was 14 I felt like starting my own business. It was not planned at all. It was just a thought and then I started working on it professionally. Now we have around 60+ products made with so much love and 5000+ satisfied customers. My business journey has been great!

Q 2: How/Why did you start the business? Who was your inspiration?

My love for skincare motivated me to start my own business. And I wanted to benefit people with good quality skincare products in affordable rates. The people around me encouraged me a lot. Becoming independent was my inspiration.

Q 3 Any childhood memory, you want to share that you think has shaped you in a woman you are today?

I always had interest in DIYs. When I was a child, I used to experiment different things and make videos. Not just skincare remedies but slimes, play doughs and there was much more which I used to make all by myself. I loved experimenting.

Q4 : Pros/ Cons of being a female Entrepreneur in 2021?

I think its really important for women to be independent so they can take a stand for themselves when things are tough. Most of the women in our society have to face torture and they can't do anything because they are not independent. They have to tolerate that all. Independent women are a role model for young girls. And to be honest I didn't face any cons. My family supports me a lot and I was never put into pressure. I always felt like doing more.

Q 5: What tips do you have for women, who would like to start their own business?

Anything can be done if you truly believe in it. Don't let anybody or anything stop you from doing what you love to do. Every single person I know who is successful at what they do is successful because they love doing it. Have enough courage to pursue your passion. Its okay to take risks, its okay to fail but its not okay to quit. Start now, start today with pure intentions and confidence.

Q 6: What do you do to be motivated?

My motivation level increases everyday when I receive the positive feedbacks about my products and so much love from my customers. When I see the hype and excitement about my products on Instagram I feel like doing more.

Q 7 : What are some challenges faced by female Entrepreneurs in Pakistan?

Females can work easily from home but when it comes to market work, it gets a little difficult.

It requires a lot of hard work to find good quality raw material and other packing stuff. We have to do the products making only by ourselves because we can't trust anybody with our recipes and also the biggest challenge is the formulation of products. We try the product on different skin types and put it to test for at least 2 weeks.

Q 8: A message for young girls?

Be the girl who believes in herself and her dreams. Discover yourself and you'll notice such talents in yourself which you have never done before. Have pure intentions and spread the love! Just don't give up trying to do what you love to do. There is no age to become an entrepreneur. When there is love and inspiration, you can't go wrong!
